History of Homeopathy Flashcards
Who was the founder of homeopathic medicine?
Hahnemann
the smallpox vaccine is a good example of…
homeopathic prophylaxy (like prevents like)
What are the 3 Hahneann’s Discoveries?
- the law of similars must guide medical practice
- the highly diluted, potentized remedies
- the theory of chronic miasms
4 characteristics of classical homeopathy
- law of similars
- single remedy
- minimum dose
- totality of symptoms
what are proving
comes from the German word “Prufung” which means test, examination, or (drug) trial
aka “homeopathic pathogenetic trial” or HPT
What is the materia medica?
the compilation of our knowledge about the therapeutic properties of the substances we administer for healing
what is a repertory?
index of symptoms which refers to remedies of materia medica
what are some sources of remedies?
plants, minerals (chemicals and elements), animals (venoms, milks, feathers)
other uncommon sources:
synthetics: chemical compounds
imponderables: immaterial dynamic energies like X-ray
what are the remedy carriers used in preparation?
solid vehicles like pellets and tablets
liquid vehicles like distilled water and alcohol
semi solid vehicles: beeswax and topical cream
what is a remedy?
homeopathic medicine
what is potency?
the number of serial dilutions and succussions in preparation of the remedy
what is potentiation/dynamization?
the process by which the dynamic power of the substance is released by serial dilutions and succussions
what is succussion
vigorous tapping of the container which is used for potentiation of liquid potencies
what is trituration
the process of diluting a non-soluble substance up to 3rd centesial potency and then will continue potentiation in liquid form
what are the 3 types of potencies?
- decimal: 1/10
- centesimal: 1/100
fifty millesimal: LM or Q potency: 1/50,000
“H”
refers to Hahnemannian method which will use different vials in the process of serial dilutions
“K”
refers to a method of manufacturing known as the Korsakovian method. The only difference is that K re-use the same bottle in the process of dynamization
what is dispensing?
to provide medicines or devices for specific treatments
what are the advantages of office based dispensing?
homeopathic medicines are not easily available in all pharmacies, so homeopaths prefer to dispense the homeopathic medicines at their office
- allows practitioners to have control on the quality and efficacy of the dispensed medicine, but also provides more convenience for patients and increases the compliance rate
what are the disadvantages of office based dispensing
there are still some ethical concerns around office-based dispensing by practitioners
what is are the standards for things to be on a prescription?
- name and address of the patient for whom the drug is prescribed
- name, strength, and quantity of the prescribed drug
- directions for use of the drug
- the name, signature, address, telephone number and college registration number fo the registrant
