Petitions made by 18+ residents with 25 signatures to get on ballot and 50% +1 vote to be passed
What are State Initiatives?
Petition Drive made by state residents to create new state laws without state government
What is a Recall Election?
Petition drive to remove state government leader
What is a State Referendum?
Petition drive to repeal a state law
Is there Direct Democracy at a federal level?
No. There is the right to petition in the 1st amendment and requires 100,000 signatures
Why did American Founding Father’s distrust Direct Democracy?
Distrust in the people and belief that they were not capable of governing. Greek philosophers also distrusted Direct Democracy
What is Indirect Democracy?
A republic. Has representatives chosen by the people govern. Created by Ancient Rome
What was the Enlightenment?
Democratic reform movement in Paris 1700s. Supported by American founders
Does the Bill of Rights include Enlightenment inspired ideas?
Yes
How did our Founding Father’s limit citizen’s powers?
