Trenches
What is a duckboard?
A board placed on the ground to stop troops from sinking in the mud
What is a Fire Step?
Soldiers used it as a stool to look and fire ‘over the top’
What is a Dugout?
A room that is dug out of the back wall of trenches. Orders received by a telephone at the dugout.
What is a periscope?
A scope that enabled troops to see ‘over the top’ without a risk of being shot
What was the barbed wire for?
It was used to slow down attacking troops. It was used for millions of miles.
What is a machine gun?
A machine gun is a rapid-firing gun that mowed down attacking troops.
What is a Concrete Bunker?
A subterranean bunker that is reinforced for safety.
What is artillery?
Huge guns that fired enormous explosive or poisonous shells for miles.
What is a machine gun nest?
A nest covering the machine gunner so they are protected and aren’t being damaged by enemy fire.
What are the sandbags used for?
Sandbags are used to reinforce the walls, muffle explosions and soak up moisture.
What were the aeroplanes used for?
They were used to help spot targets for artillery, dropping bombs on the enemies and shooting down enemy planes
What is a communication trench?
A trench that linked the front line trench to the reserve trenches.
What are reserve trenches?
Trenches that soldiers went to, to rest or to wait to go to the front line.
What is a gas bell?
A gas bell is an alarm that would be rung to tell the troops to put on gas masks.
