Raising the alarm by means of loud shouts and cries when a crime had been committed against you. Everyone in the hearing distance would join the hunt for the criminal.

Local magistrates appointed to keep the peace and hear minor legal cases

Local medieval courts that dealt with mainly minor crimes

Norman law that made the whole community pay a heavy fine if a Norman was killed
