What is a source
A source is something that gives us information or evidence about a person place or thing in the past
What is archaeology
Archaeology is the study of the remains left by people in the past
What is a primary source
A source from the time of the event a first hand account of what happened
What is a secondary source
Is a source from a later date, after the time of the event

How do archaeologists find sites 4 answers
1) Ruins of an old building
2) An ariel photograph (shapes that are not obvious to us at ground level are sometimes revealed to be the lines of ancient structures)
3) An old document, map or other record
4) By accident
What is a test trench
A sample hole dug to see if there is anything of interest present and judge whether it is worth excavating the whole site
What is carbon 14 dating and how does it work
The older the tissue, the less carbon 14 it contains and how little can tell us how old
What is dendrochronology
A method of dating that uses the unique growth patterns of tree rings as a guide
What were Mesolithic peoples houses
The mesolithic people were nomadic. Regularly moving from place to place.
Archaeologists believed they lived in temporary dwellings such as tents
What did the Neolithic do differently do the Mesolithic age in Ireland
They found new skills such as bread making tomb building and pottery making but most of all farming

Druids were spiritual figures similar to priests in pre Christian celtic Ireland

Who were Patricians
The patricians were the wealthy noble families who ruled Rome. They had huge estates and hundreds of slaves. They controlled the Roman government and army
Who were the Plebeians
The poor who made up the vast majority of the population. They farmed worked in trade and served in the army.
What did Patricians have that was different to rich Plebeians
Some plebeians became quite wealthy through trades they were known as equites but they had no political power unlike Patricians
What were the Plebeians given
The Plebeians were giving dole a payment of free grain so that they would support the rule of patricians
What houses did the patrician have and the plebeian have
A patrician family lived in a large detached house called a domus but the Plebeians lived in apartment blocks called insulae these were usually five storeys high filled with families
Who became slaves in Ancient Rome
-Any prisoners of war became slaves
-The children of slaves automatically became slaves
-People captured by pirates and bandits while trading were often sold as slaves
-Parents in debt sometimes sold their own children into slavery
What was marriage like in Ancient Rome
Roman girls usually married at age 14 or 15. They would be expected to run her husbands home.
Many women died in childbirth so men often married several times and a girl could easily end up marrying a man her fathers age
What was Education like in Ancient Rome
Plebeian Children received a basic education at home. A wealthy Romans education had three different stages
1. Boys and girls from 7-12 attended ludus they learned reading, writing and arithmetic.
2. At 12 boys only continued education and studied History, Grammar, Geomatry and studied literature.
3. At 16 a patrician boy was thought the art of public speaking

Public baths, chariot racing, Roman theatres, amphitheatres and gladiators
What do you know about the Roman army
The Roman army was the most successful fighting force in the ancient world. Men signed up for 25 years of service and were highly trained. They fought with a vast array of weapons and could March long distances in short amounts of distances
