Confucianism
philosophy of living in a regulated society, with 4 main tenants: Ren (benevolence), Yi (duty), Li (ritual, decorum, tradition), Xiao (respect for one’s elder, teacher, and ancestors)
Yayue
a form of classical music and dance performed at royal court and temples in ancient china. Connection and exclusivity to ancient chinese culture
Daoism
seeks to find harmony with nature and society through certain principles
Suyue
common or vulgar music. Associated with wandering minstrels and courtesans
Buddhism
a religion of self‐realization that was developed in India out of the teachings and life of the Buddha, emphasized the meditative aspects of Indian Buddhism with the appreciation of nature from Daoism
Yaji
cultivated gatherings, where members of the scholarly elite and nobility would present their works to one another.
Siyi
The Four Arts. Classical art practicied by the nobility and scholarly class individually and in yaji, a gathering of cultured gentlemen
Yin/Yang
the black area represents the Chinese conception of female energy, associated with things like night, cold, silence, decay, and earth, and the white area outlines the opposite concepts—day, heat, sound, growth, and heaven, each extreme yields to the birth of the other, just as each end leads to a new beginning, and each new undertaking will one day come to an end.
