17
Q

Why was the “Calgary Police Force” or “Calgary City Police” name changed?

A

In 1973, Chief Sawyer changed the name to “Calgary Police Service” feeling it more accurately represented the police role in the community.

18
Q

Why is there a red stripe along the trousers?

A

Foot regiments - on patrol wore red or blue. RCMP is the only police service allowed to wear yellow to signify Calvary patrol; it is easier to see them in the dust of battle.

19
Q

Why wear a uniform to police the community?

A

In the olden days, police were unskilled common people who needed to create a better image in the community and distinction in a crowd. The badge of office, stripes and tunics, forge caps or pith helmets, helped to bring attention, compliance and respect.
