A

Unreasonable searches and seizures. YOu cannot enter a property without a judge given warrant which needs evidence to back it up. You can also secure your home, persons, papers and effects.

A

The due process of law, everyone must follow the rules when making an arrest. The police have to go to a grand jury to get a court date with evidence. Double jeopardy, no self incrimination, duprocess, and just compensation. If the state needs your property they must pay you the market price.

A

The house of congress is the house of representatives and the Senate together; the legislative branch. Impeaches federal government representatives, deal with revenue on bills and decide the president with an electoral tie.

3 branches of government

A

The three branches of government are the legislative, executive and judicial branch. Created with different tasks to stop one branch from becoming too powerful over the others. Legislative is house of congress along with others parts, they create laws, declare war, and control taxes. The executive branch is tasked with enforcing the laws also president. The judicial branch holds the Supreme Court which determines wether a new bill in constitutional or not.

Articles of Confederation

A

Originally created to unite the colonies under one main form of government document and stop a monarchy from forming. It didn’t allow any main form of government that could tax, declare war or use a postal system. The main problem with the lack of taxes was a major debt.

Shays rebellion

A

Since the US had no money the different states began to print their own forms of money that weren’t worth anything. So the farmers who were former soldiers were promised now worthless money. Daniel Shay a farmer raised about 100 farmers who stopped the judges who shut them down from coming in.

Constitutional Convention

A

After seeing the problems with the lack of money in the US and the no major form of government James Madison and Alexander Hamilton wanted to start a whole new form of government. Called together a delegate from each state in Pennsylvania in July. 55 delegates came together and they discussed two main problems. How to defy power between state and federal government and how much authority should each branch have. Was all corded but kept a secert to the press at the times. Decided on three branch’s and the how to elect representatives.

James Madison

A

Was considered the father of the constitution. He brought together the constitutional convention to create a new form of government. He was a federalist who also worked on the federalist papers. He was also the person who recorded everything that happened in the constitutional convention and decided it shouldn’t be public. A congressman and the 4th president of the United States. He also created the Virginia plan, that the government should be Bicameral and based in the population of states.

A

Was the first president of the United States and was the reason the presidential term limit is two. He came back into political after Shay’s rebellion and was the president of the constitutional convention. He showed great leadership and character.

Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo

A

This was the treaty that ended the Mexican American war by forcing the Mexicans to give up 55% of their claims. Was a peace’s negotiation and ended up paying 15 million dollars because they felt bad.

Mormons

A

Fled from their homes because of religious persecution. This was the opportunity for them to have a permanent settlement. As they traveled they moved in what was like a village on wheels, even when traveling had a very big sense of community. Were kind to the environment and set up camps for the sick or injured following them. The were also kind to native and killed animals for food not sport.

Missionaries

A

Believed that they could shape the natives and the new settlers to come over, wanted to save souls. Terrorized the natives and killed their homes and towns along with forcing the to become slaves and learn Christianity. Some native were very willing to listen to what they had to say as they wanted to become closer with the creator. Started blending the two practices together. However eventually rejected Christianity as the believed it was white man medicine and it was to twisted to work.

James w Marshall found gold and created the gold rush. Many fled over in the chance that they might be able to find gold, people from all across the world came but many never found gold. The people who made real money where the merchants and people who sold to the miners. The work was often back breaking and difficult along with poor sanitation and living situations. Eventually was overtaken by big machines.

Mountain Men

A

Came over after the Louisiana purchase to trade furs with the native Americans. Mainly beaver pelts because they kept people extremely warm and were expensive. Every year they would all gather together at rendezvous were they would party and drink and be together as most of the time they were on their own. Eventually beavers almost became extinct and silk hats started becoming much more popular.

Pioneer Women

A

First opportunity for women to be able to come over to the west. Women were able to claim their own land because of the homestead act. Allowed women to stay at home and start doing domestic work. Wyoming allowed women to vote in 1870. Women were also able to start working but as men realized it made them less many it progressively stopped.

Mexican Cession

A

The relations with Mexico were extremely bad. Both believed that they had different boarders so Polk sent down troops to monitor and 16 people were killed, allowing the us to declare war on Mexico. The Us wins tremendously and claims land with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Henry Clay

A

Was a politician who created the Missouri compromise in the 1820s and the compromise of 1850. He was an important part of congress and was in both the senate and house of congress.

Industrial Revolution

A

Was started in Great Britain but was treasons to spread outside of the country. Eventually got spread to the US and the start of steamboats railroads, mass production, and an extremely important part of the civil war for the north as the south refused to be a part.

Cotton Gin (Whitney)

A

Was created by eli Whitney when he traveled to the south and saw how difficult it was for the slaves to separate cotton flower from the cotton seed. He created a machine to do that for them but then instead it created the demand for slaves as it became the biggest cash crop in the south.

A

Ran against Lincoln twice and won the first time, but also participated in debate with Lincoln. He also created the Kansas Nebraska act to abolish the Missouri compromise in 1854. Made northerners extremely upset because southerners came over for the popular sovereignty and many people were killed.

A

Created the Lowell mills in Massachusetts. Allowed women and girls to be able to work for one of the first times. It mass produced fabric and created the need for supply and demand along with the industrialization.

A

Played a big part in land acquisition and was the 11th president of the US. Allowed Texas to become a state and set up the organ boundary dispute with the 49th parallel. Added the Gadsden purchase during his time.

A

Was sent by polk to purchase the Gadsden purchase for railroads. He was a general while Polk was in power and was to charge of the troops sent down to the boarder and won the Mexican American war.

A

Were two brothers sent by Louis and Clark to explore he Louisiana purchase and record into journals what the found. With the help of Sacajawea they were able to travel over the Rockies.

A

The supreme judge who was from the south but had a very northern mindset. Wanted to find some way for slaves to be unconstitutional but really found the compromises to be unconstitutional because slaves are technically property.

A

Was created by Henry clay in the 1820s because of the controversy over slave and free states. It admitted main as a free state and the 36 line determined that everything above was free and everything below wasn’t. Failed because of the expansion of the country.

A

Also created by Henry clay in 1850 to stop the south from leaving the union. When California applied to be a free state the balance was offset so California was determined as free and the other states where going to be decided on later.

Fugitive Slave Act

A

Originally stopped escaped southern slaves from living free in the north but was then progressed by the compromise of 1850. Slaves now could be caught by slave marshalls and returned to their original owners along with big fines for helping slaves escape.

A

Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe after she visited the south and saw slaves lives she published a book that penned people’s eyes to the discrimination in the south.

A

Had 4 people on the ballet but Lincoln wasn’t on the southern ballet. However he still won and since he did the south felt that they were the minority and left the union.

John Brown

A

Attacked slave owners in Kansas Nebraska and killed them with his sons. Then later tried to start a slave revolt by raiding a federal arsenal. Was hung and his five sons were killed there. A very big symbol in both the north and south for different reasons. Inspired others to do the same and that slaves aren’t right to own.

A

The south leaving from the union because they felt that the federal government shouldn’t have this much power over the states and that they shouldn’t be able to control if you have slaves or not.

Fort Sumner

A

After the secession of the southern states they believed that this federal first belonged to them because it was in their territory. Stormed the fort and shelled it for 36 hours until the northern troops came out. Started the civil war.

Advantages/Disadvantages of both the North/South

A

The north had much worse leadership but had railroads and industry that allowed them to get ahead of south with transportation and communication. The south had very good leadership but they failed to industrialize eventually leading to their demise.

Battle of Bull Run

A

1861 - Was the first major battle in the civil war fought in the east by union general McDowell and confederate P.G.T Beauregard. Lincoln wanted to take the capital in Virginia. Stationed less than ten miles away but stayed an extra weeks allowing pgt to know where they were. Fought over bull run creek and Jackson brought in his troops to help the confederates win.

Battle of Antietam

A

1862 - Bloodiest day of America fought in the east by union general McClellan and confederate general Lee. Lee attempted to take the capital and the union troops found his plan in a field by luck. Needed to get there before the two confederate troops could close in but didn’t get their fast enough. Huge battle with major casualties but union technically won.

Battle of Vicksburg

A

1863 - was fought in the west by union general grant and confederate general Permberton. Union wanted to seize Vicksburg to split the confederacy in half and control the Mississippi River. First attack didn’t work but then surrounded the town for six weeks until they surrendered on July 4th.

Battle of Gettysburg

A

1863 - Fought in the east by union general Meade and confederate general Lee. Lee attempted to storm the capital to get Vicksburg out of siege. Lasted three days long. The confederate ps marched up to Gettysburg to get supplies and then attacked by the union. The union had the high ground on both sides and the confederacy attempted to retrieve that but failed. As a last ditch effort they all charged for a mile on the third day and hundreds died ending the battle and all hopes of the confederacy ever being able to attack to capital again or recover.

Emancipation Proclamation

A

Was created by Abraham Lincoln during the war freeing all slaves in the confederate states. It allowed the union armies to have a massive influx of new soldiers halfway through the war.

Gettysburg Adress

A

A two minute long speech Lincoln gave about the soldiers at the nations soldiers cemetery in virgins. Is extremely famous because he was able to use very few words to get across a meaningful point.

Dred Scott Case

A

Roger Taney was the main judge at the time and he wanted to discover if all of the compromises were constitutional or not on this case. He discovered that they were not because you cannot tell someone where to keep their property. And a slave can also not bring a case to court. This was the real start of the reasons for the civil war.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

A

Created by Steven’s Douglas because he wanted to establish a railroad and needed territories to do so. Made them popular sovereignty so that people would come over and to abolish the Missouri compromise. Eventually causing an uprise in the north and why they needed to fix the problem.

A

The north originally wanted to abolish slavery at the start of the war but as the war went on the union wanted to reunite the country. The south wanted to keep slavery and not be told what they can and can’t do by federal government

A

Apposed to slavery and the resin that the south left the union. Created the emancipation proclamation, the Steven Douglas debates and used the telegraph to communicate with the rest of the country during the war. He became very well known and was an excellent speaker but then later assainated.

Florida

A

James Monroe wanted Andrew Jackson, a well known cocky généal to go protect the boarder of Florida and Georgia. He invades Florida and capture or kills the native as well as establishing a new form of government. Spain demands James Monroe to do something about this and he goes to hie board. Everyone says the same thing but John Adam’s says govern or get out. Spain leaves, treaty of 1890 and they must pay Spain 5 million dollars to give up their claim with Florida and the us had to give up their claim with Texas. Made people mad because Texas had good farming and Florida didn’t.

Texas

A

M’osas austin wants Americans to come over and set up a small territory. He dies and son sets it up but now it’s Mexico not Spain. Steven Austin set up a small catholic cotton farming territory. Women could own land and businesses. Became a huge success and a lot of people came over making Mexico angry. Santa Anua closed the boarder and threw Austin in jail. Then let Austin out in 1835 and starts a revolt against the Alamo. A very small religious town and trap 180 Texans in the Alamo a fort, for eleven days. Killed everyone and Texas revolted. They then were not a part of the union for ten years.

Oregon country

A

Was found by Lewis and Clark and later Jedidiah smith finds the south pass. It was wanted by Spain but dropped out with the 1790 treaty and Russia dropped out with the Getsting part. Now it was joint inbetween the us and England. Missionaries came over and said how great it was so others started wanted to come over too. Great for the economy and James Polk stopped the joint between the two.

Gadsden purchase

A

James Polk sent Zachary Taylor to buy this piece before the Mexican American war and they said no, but afterwards they were able to purchase it. Spent 10 million dollars on a tiny amount of land because it was the only flat land around for railroads.

Assimilation

A

Was the idea from manifest destiny that it was their devine right to live there and any way they could to get rid of the natives. The would murder the native or they would kidnap their children at a young age and attempt to put them into white boarding schools. They later just kidnapped them and forced them into foster homes but the foster families would only do this because they were getting paid so they would treat them extremely badly.
