What did Granville Sharp and Thomas Clarkson do?

A

Granville Sharp was a lawyer and helped former slaves in court against their old masters. Later on, a group of strict Christians including Granville Sharp and a man named Thomas Clarkson created a group called ‘The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade.’ They got signatures from members of the public on huge petitions.

A

What did Josiah Wedgewood do?

A

He was a pottery manufacturer who was strongly against slavery and made over 200,000 medallions that went on bracelets, brooches and plates. The medallion had a picture of a slave in the middle and around him were the words ‘am I not a father or a brother?’

What did Olaudah Equiano do?

A

He was a former slave and campaigned tirelessly to end slavery. He was taken from his home aged 11 and travelled widely as a servant to a ships captain. He learned to read and write when he was in Britain. He then wrote his autobiography which explained the horrors he went through. It was read widely and turned many people against slavery.

What did Toussant L’Ourveture do?

A

He was a slave on the island Saint Dominique and in 1791, Toussant L’Ourveture led a rebellion in which they killed the plantation owners and set fire to the crops. They renamed the island Haiti and in later years they defended attacks from both British and French soldiers.
