incomplete and sometimes false assumptions we form about individuals, groups, or countries due to personal bias and/or unequal power relations.
Single Story
the political, economic, geographic, and social situations that influence the events during a particular time period
historical context
a first-hand original account, record, or evidence, about a person, place, object, or an event; often reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant or oberserver
primary source
an account, records, or evidence taken from an original or primary source and are weitten or prodeuced after the fact
secondary source
understnading people in the past by examining their actions without the bias of modern thinking; the ability to share a historical figure’s lived experience to gain a better understanding of that person, time period, or event.
historical empathy
a new settlement or territory established and governed by a mother country in another land
colony
the way a society organizes the manufacture and exchange of things of value, such as money, food, products, and services.
economy
area of land that has common features and characteristics
region
a contract, from the King of England, which allowed its people to live in the colony with varying degrees of control by King.
charter
a governing body in which at least one half of the members are elected by members of the colony
colonial legislature
the unjust or unfair use of government power; a ruler who uses power this way is a tyrant
tyranny
an amount of money that a government requires people to pay that is used to pay for the things done by the government
tax
to formally pass or approve a law, prolicy, contract or an agreement
ratify
to take back or cancel a law
repeal
a violent action in opposition to a government or law
revolt
a formal written request typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with repect to a particular cause.
petition
a colonist whofelt a deep loyalty to Great Britain and its cause
loyalist
a colonist who had a deep loyalty to the American colonies, not Great Britain
patirot
a peaceful form of political protest against certain laws or taxes
civil disobedience
to refuse to biy one or more goods from a certain source
boycott
