What was the experience of catholics in the 1950s and 1960s

A

Catholics were discriminated against because there religion. They are less likely to get jobs and have to wait much longer to get houses. They were sometimes intimidated by the police force called the RUC. They are mostly Protestant and are suspicious of catholics. Unionists control the government they have a majority in Northern Ireland, but they also draw the electoral boundaries to make sure unionists always have the majority. One good thing for catholics is the welfare state. This gave them free health care education and benefits

A

Protestants now have there o n freedom and they are safe as part of the UK. Jobs were given to the most loyal of Protestants. Protestants are scared the catholics want a united ireland, the RUC protects us from groups like the IRA. Northern Ireland is much better than the Republic of Ireland , Northern Ireland has much better industry and welfare state
