The Hockey Sweater

A

Roch Carrier was a French-CAN novelist that wrote the book “The Hockey Sweater” from his experience growing up as a kid in 1946. This story speaks on the cultural power of lengendary Maurice Richard and the conflict between the French and English Canadians. Story was Roch bought a sweater from the Eaton Catalogie of a #9 roch Carrier jersy being a fan and instead in the mail was given a Toronto Maple Leafs jersy. Roch was frowned upon and unable to play hockey from players and coaches with that jersy. Showes the relationship between Franophones and Anglophones.

Vees a rough and talented team that fought in practice with each other and seen as ‘dirty’. A political victory with pressure to win and the team relieved and thrilled.

Kitchener Waterloo Dutchmen

A

Represented Team CAN at Winter Olympics in Italy 1956. Ex pros were not allowed to play and all the best players bannned. The team was made up of Senior B and Junior A replacements. Coach was Bobby Bayer ex. NHL star. Had alot of community support but ended up winning the bronze medal to USSR. Major kick in the teeth, people were angry and blammed it on injuries and bad reffing. It was a shock in Canada and were sore losers about it. Being embassadors for Can was not good enough. Represented CAN again at 1960 olympics Anger and frusteration stemmed from also loosing to the US that year and getting the silver medal. Many good players and beat USSR and Euro teams.
