The way in which an economy is organized in order to produce commodities to sustain society
What are the types of systems of production?
Slash and burn, encomienda, slavery, the plantation system and indentureship
What is slash and burn?
Technique of agriculture used by the Tainos and the Mayans to grow crops
What was the method used in slash and burn?
Clearing land by burning to remove the vegetation and pests
What is the Encomienda System?
System established as a means of Christianizing and obtaining labour from the indigenous people
What was the purpose of the encomienda system?
- to gain gold for Spain

What are the negative impacts of the encomienda system?
- Death of several native Indians
