A
- many soldiers deserted due to harsh conditions.
- many remained loyal to US army as they wanted better treatment.
- were promised large bounties, however they were not paid as Articles of Confederation were ineffective.
- led to economic crisis of 1780s and experiences of poverty.

- at the end of the war, they were branded as traitors
- treated poorly
- Treaty of Paris 1783 allowed for ‘justice and equality’ for loyalists, however it was not honoured.

- Most sided with British as they believed it would provide them with security –> Americans saw them as traitors and an enemy as they fought against them.
- Treaty of Paris gave Americans land between Appalachian Mountains and Ohio river. This resulted in First Nations to feel as if their land had been given away to the US.
- Were ignored in Treaty of Paris

African Americans
A
- Banned by Washington from further recruitment in army until they weren’t enough white soldiers.
- black loyalists returned to slavery after the war, their freedom not considered

Enslaved people
A
- Were promised freedom if they fought for British, some received transport to England, some receiving nothing.
- Post-war treatment depended on where they lived.
Pennsylvania Act –> decline of slavery
Bill passed by State assembly to slowly phase out slavery in each state.

Women
A
- ‘Ladies Association’ continued the work of Daughters of Liberty.
- They demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the congress.
Despite their support for the revolution, they were excluded from the benefits of the new society.
