Industrialization
During progressive era –> industrialization, shifting focus from agriculture to marketing and cities –> more people expanding into cities for work –> issues in cities needing to find ways to expand quickly (crie rates, buildings made with poor ventilation, packed close together so fires spread, cheap materials and easily feel apart)

-dangers with overpopulating
-problems with advancements
Muckrakers –> Journalism, Photography, novels in Gilded age
How the Other Half Lives, The Jungle, The New Yprk World and Spanish American war
Themes:
-Power of the media
-Journalism/media being more powerful than the standard conventions of disobedience (war, rebellion, etc)
Labor Organizations in Progressive US Era
Extremely poor working conditions –> hazardous surroundings, exhuasting hours (12 hours) – Triangle shirtwaist factor type beat conditions
–>Labor organizations to advocate for improvement –> National Labor Union/Knights of Labor –> Haymarket Affair protesting McCorkick Harvest Plant spiraled into a massacre by throwing a bomb by unknown individual

-Dangers of rebellion
-Dangers of protest
-Courage not lying in
-Rebellion not helping social change -> not direct way; not reliable
Native Americans and Westward Expansion
As American groups expanded Westward for materials, clashed with Native Americans WEnt as far as killing sacred buffallo materials for Native Americans –> Indians faced Ameiricinzation in terms of names, clothing and would face jaill time if not followed
Themes:
-Dangers of expansion
-Dangers of pushing on beliefs/conformity –> eliminating cultural diversity, stiffles a group
- fact that they went as far to kill buffallo shows how this confmority has to reached in immoral means; its not spreading beliefs its crueling eliminating another to have their own dominate
Great Depression Effects
Men lost jobs and could not support families, became hoboes n trains, hitichg rides and looking for food
-Women had to find ways to adapt –>used household items to make new clothes and cheap ways to repaire other household items to save money
-Children had to miss on on educational opportunities
Themes:
-Problems being able to affect all
-Women –> how problems can push/challenge us

Harlem Renaissance
Variety of different music, artistic figures emerged through Harlem NYC during gilded age –> provided hope and inspiration for African Americans who faced prevelent discrimination and became a way of showing how success could still be achieved (Ella fitzgerald, etc); formed basis of civil rights movement
-Importance of hope in one’s life
-importance of art/music
-importance of creativity –> serve as inspiration for those who lost it
-Defying societal bounds/importance of doing so
-Shifting worldviews
-Proving worth
-Identity
The New Deal –> Pros/Cons
Plan set to fix the depression –> Francis Townsend didn’t agree with it/opposed plan for not replying pension for retired individuals who would never have support systems–> Listened and created the SSA
