When did the British come to India?
A
The British came to India in 1600, as traders. (Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter which gave the East India Company exclusive rights of trading in India)

What kick started the company’s career as a territorial power?
A
In 1765, the Company, which until then had purely trading fucntions obtained the ‘diwani’ (i.e. rights over revenue and civil justice) of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
