Crashed in 1929 and plunged into the Great Depression
Winter of 1932 America was in the depths of the greatest economical crisis
Unemployment reached to 13 million
People live in deprived conditions and were close to famine
Moved to shacks
American slavery
First brought from Africa to America in the 17,18&19 centuries
Forcibly transported across the Atlantic in slave ships
Sold as slaves to work on sugar and cotton plantations in Caribbean and southern states
No rights and white owners saw them as animals or machines
Slavery abolished in 1865
Blacks powerless
Nothing was equal and black had the worst of everything
Whites had the best of the best
Segregation in 1930s
50% of population was black
Had no vote and could not marry whites
Black people had their own schools, churches, football teams and cemeteries
The Scottβsboro case
In 1931 nine men were accused of raping two white women
After bitter trials 4 men sentenced to long imprisonment
Prominent lawyers argued that the accusations were false
Later the women were found lying
