Histology Slides Flashcards
What is the function of Simple Squamous Epithelium
Allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration, where protection is not important; secretes lubricating substances in serosae.
Where is Simple Squamous Epithelium located?
Lining of heart and blood and lymphatic vessels.
What is the function of Simple Cuboidal Epithelium?
Forms walls of smallest ducts of glands and many kidney tubules.
Where is Simple Cuboidal Epithelium located?
Ovary surface & kidney tubules.
What is the function of Simple Columnar Epithelium?
Absorption; secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other symptoms.
Where is Simple Columnar Epithelium located?
Gallbladder, uterine tubes, and most of the digestive tract.
What is the function of the Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium?
Secrete substances, particularly mucus; propulsion of mucus by ciliary action.
Where is Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium located?
Male’s sperm carrying ducts & ducts of large glands.
What is the function of Stratified Squamous Epithelium?
Protects the underlying tissue in areas subjected to abrasion.
Where is the Stratified Squamous Epithelium located?
Forms moist linings of the esophagus, mouth, and vagina; epidermis of the skin.
What is the function of the Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium?
Secretion & protection; makes multiple membrane junctions between adjacent cells.
Where is Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium located?
Largest ducts of sweat, mammary, and salivary glands.
What is the function of the Stratified Columnar Epithelium?
Protects the underlying tissues from damage and infection.
Where is the Stratified Columnar Epithelium located?
Pharynx & male urethra.
What is the function of the Transitional Epithelium?
Permits stored urine to distend urinary organ.
Where is Transitional Epithelium located?
Lines the uterus, bladder, and part of the urethra.
