Histology Lecture 3 Flashcards
What is the smallest unit in life?
A cell
What type of tissue is this?
Epithelial
How many different cell types are found in the human body?
200 different cell types
What is the definition of an organ
Cells that are grouped together based on similar structure and function
What are the four basic tissue types?
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscular tissue
- Nervous tissue
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Lines and covers surfaces
What is the function of connective tissue?
Protects, supports and binds together
What is the function of muscular tissue?
Produces movement
What is the function of nervous tissue
Control, receives stimuli and conducts impulses
Where can epithelial tissue be found in the body?
-Covers body surfaces
-Lines body cavities
-Lines blood and lymph vessels
Protects these places
What does secretory (glandular) epithelia do?
- Produces fluid secretions
- Two types, exocrine and endocrine
What other functions does epithelial tissue have?
- Absorption- brings small molecules into cells
- Filtration- passage of small molecules through a sieve-like membrane
- Sensory reception
What are tissue types are these?
Epithelial tissue
What type of epithelial tissue is this?
Simple squamous epithelium
What type of epithelial tissue is this
Simple cuboidal epithelium
What type of tissue is this?
Simple columnar epithelial
How is epithelial tissue classified?
Classified by number of cell layers
- Simple: allow substances to pass through
- Stratified: protection
- Cell shape
- Squamous
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
Where can simple squamous epithelium tissue be found in the body?
Air sacs of lungs
Lining of heart
Lymphatic vessels
Where can simple cuboidal epithelium be found in the body?
Kidney tubules, ovary surface
Where can simple columnar epithelium be found in the body?
Digestive tract, gallbladder
Where can stratified squamous epithelium be found in the body?
Vagina, moist linings of the esophagus and mouth
