Histology Background and History Flashcards
What is Histology?
The study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues of plants and animals
What is Histopathology
Study of tissues to understand diseases
What are the 4 Basic types of tissues?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous Tissues
Which tissue group do they belong to: Ducts of glands
Epithelial
Which tissue group do they belong to: Skin
Epithelial and connective
Which tissue group do they belong to: Lining of blood and lympathic vessels
Epithelial (but only on the basic level) Technically all are correct
Which tissue group do they belong to: Fat
Connective
Which tissue group do they belong to: Red and white blood cells
Connective
Which tissue group do they belong to: Kidney tubules
Epithelial
Which tissue group do they belong to: Cartilage
Connective
Which tissue group do they belong to: Tendons and ligaments
Connective
What are the four fluid humors?
Blood, Phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile
What was Marie Francois Xavier Bichat’s main contribution?
- Main contribution was perception that the diverse body organs contain particular tissues or membranes - he described 21 of them that combine in different ways to form the organs of the body - He did not use microscopes (didn’t trust them)
How did Marie Bichat see life?
He haw life as divided into two parts. The organic (vegetative state) and the animal life
What was a new notion of tissues that Bichat introduced?
That tissues were distant entities and that diseases attacked tissues rather than whole organs or the entire body
What was Rudolph Carl Virchow’s main contribution?
Pioneered concept of pathological processes through the application of the cell theory. “All cells come from cells”
What is the connection between Virchow and the Cell theory?
He realized early on that the part of the cell theory that required all cells to be derived from existing cells could give insight into pathological processes
