Histology and Methods of Study Flashcards
What are the four types of Tissues?
- Epithelial Tissues
- Nervous Tissues
- Muscle Tissues
- Connective Tissues
What are epithelial tissues classified by?
Shape and Layers
What is the function of epithelial tissues?
Protection, Secretion, Absorption and focus barriers. It also covers organs and forms glands.
Describe the features of epithelial tissues
Close cell contact
Avascular
Innervated
Regenerative
Polar Cell
Name four Stainings
- Hematoxyline + Eosin (H&E staining )
- Periodic acid - Schiff
- Lipid Soluble dyes
What is metal impregnation?
A technique that allows for the mapping of brain regions by visualisation of neuronal connections
What is Autoradiography?
A method of localising newly synthesised macromolecules in cells or tissue sections
What is Enzyme Histochemistry?
A method for localising cellular structures using specific enzymatic activity present in those structures
What are examples of molecules that interact specifically with other molecules? (Immunohistochemistry)
- Phalloidin - interacts strongly with the actin protein of microfilaments
- Protein A - binds to Fc region of antibody molecules
- Lectins - Bind to carbohydrates with high affinity and specificity.
Describe the hybridisation technique
- Determine if a cell has a specific sequence of DNA, such as a gene
- Identify the cells containing specific messenger RNAs to which the corresponding gene is being transcribed
3.Determinating the localisation of a gene in a specific chromosome
Describe the method of Autoradiography
- Radiolabled cells are coated in photographic emu
