Histology Flashcards
What is the structure of the epidermis
Stratisfied squamous epithelium
(top)
stratum corneum
stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum basale
Dermis
(bottom)
What cells can be in the epidermis
Keratinocytes (95% of epidermal cells)
Langerhans cells (antigen-presenting)
Merkel cells (sensory receptors)
Melanocytes (produce melanin)
Whats the difference between thin and thick skin
Based on presence of stratum lucidum
What is the basic structure of mucous membranes
Epithelium
Lamnia propria
What is the structure of the oral mucosa
Stratified squamous epithelium
Lamina propria
What is the difference between lining and masticatory mucosa
Lining
-mobile
-non keratinised
-loose lamina propria with wide submucosa
Masticatory
-The palate and gums
-(para)keratinised
-Thick lamina propria
Difference between keratinised and non-keratinised histologically
Non-keratinised will have a flat layer on top with nucleus’s whereas keratinised will have a thin flat layer with no nucleus’s
What is gustatory mucosa like
Mucosa of the tongue
Similar to masticatory
Keratinised
Present only on dorsum of tongue
Characterised by papillae, some bearing taste buds
What accounts for 10% of epithelial cells
Non-keratinocytes (‘clear’ cells)
-melanocytes
-merkel cells
-langerhans cells
