Histology Flashcards
What is the composition of the extra cellular matrix?
Protein fibers- collagen, reticular and elastic
What does epithelial tissue do?
Forms boundaries, protects, secretes, absorbs, filters
What is the difference bettween cutaneous, mucous and serous membranes?
Cutaneous= skin
Mucous=lines hollow organs that open onto body surface
Serous=lines closed cavities
Function of stratified squamous epithelium?
Protects underlying tissue
Where are simple squamous epithelium found?
Kidney glomeruli, alveoli, lining of heart
What is transitional epithelium?
Dome like surface cells which stretch readily and permits distension of urinary organs
Functions of connective tissue
Structure
Protection
Storage
Transportation
Defence
What is ehlers danlos syndrome
Due to abnormal collagen gene
Causes hypermobile joints and hyperelastic skin
How would u describe the structure of hyaline cartilage?
It has a firm matrix
Where would you find fibrocartilage
Invertebral discs, public symphysis
What does elastic cartilage allow for?
Flexibility
Striated vs non striated
Skeletal muscle tissue?
Smooth muscle tissue?
Cardiac muscle tissue?
Skeletal=striated
Smooth=non striated
Cardiac=striated
What is the function of smooth muscle? Is this a voluntary or involuntary action?
It propels objects or substances under involuntary control
Difference between unipotent and pluripotent stem cells?
Unipotent=can give rise to only one cell type
Pluripotent=can give rise to several cell types
Example of a pluripotent stem cell
Blood stem cell
