Histology Flashcards
What are the four main types of tissue?
Epithelial, connective, nervous, muscular.
What categories is epithelial tissue broken into?
Simple: squamous, cuboidal, columnar, pseudo-stratified columnar
Stratified: squamous, cuboidal, transitional
What categories is connective tissue broken into?
Fibrous: loose (areolar or reticular), dense (regular or irregular)
Cartilage: hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
Oddballs: Adipose, blood, bone
What categories is muscle tissue broken into?
Cardiac, skeletal, and smooth
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Covers/lines organ surfaces, forms glands and skin, helps with secretion and absorption
Where can simple squamous epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Lung air sacs, kidneys, heart/blood vessel endothelium, serous membranes of stomach/intestines, surface mesothelium of pleura, pericardium, peritoneum, and mesenteries
What are the characteristics of simple squamous epithelial tissue?
Single layer of thin, disc-like cells, nucleus is flattened
Where can simple cuboidal epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Glands: liver, thyroid, mammary, salivary
Most kidney tubules
Bronchioles
What are the characteristics of simple cuboidal epithelial tissue?
Single layer of square or rounded cube-like cells
Nuclei: circular, located in center of cell
Where can simple columnar epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Inner lining of stomach, intestines, gallbladder & uterus
Some kidney tubules
What are the characteristics of simple columnar epithelial tissue?
Single layer of tall, narrow (rectangular) cells
Oval shaped nucleus
Vertically oriented
Usually in basal half of cell
Where can stratified squamous epithelial tissue be found in the body
Keratinized: Epidermis (palms & soles)
Non-keratinized: Tongue, oral mucosa, esophagus, anal canal, vagina
What are the characteristics of stratified squamous epithelial tissue?
Multiple layers with cells becoming increasingly flat/scaly toward surface
Basal area may be more cuboidal in shape
Can be keratinized (layer of compact dead cells without nuclei)
Where can stratified cuboidal epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Sweat gland ducts, ovary follicles, seminiferous tubules of testis
What are the characteristics of stratified cuboidal epithelial tissue?
2+ layers of cells
Surface cells= square or rounded
Where can stratified columnar epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Parts of conjunctiva and eye
Parts of pharynx
Lobar ducts in salivary glands
What are the characteristics of stratified columnar epithelial tissue?
Multiple layers with cells becoming columnar toward surface
Basal area may be more cuboidal in shape
Where can pseudo-stratified columnar epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Respiratory tract (nasal cavity -> bronchi)
Parts of male urethra
What are the characteristics of pseudo-stratified epithelial tissue?
Single layer of cells that look multi-layered
All cells originate from basement membrane
Nuclei at several levels
Ciliated
Where can stratified transitional epithelial tissue be found in the body?
Umbilical cord
Urinary tract: part of kidneys, ureter, urethra, bladder
