Q

Explain the reasons why Aristogaiton and Harmodios wanted to kill the Tyrants.

A

These two men tried to kill the two tyrants at the time (527 bc) Hippardes and Hippias—sons of Peisistratos—because they were tyrants and Hippardes shooed off Harmodios’ sister who was in love with him, because he himself was in love with Harmodius.

Did Aristogaiton and Harmodios succeed in killing both tyrants Hippias and Hipparches?

What were the consequences

A

No the two naked men only succeeded to kill Hippias, which led Hipparches to put them both in prison. They (naked men) were considered heroes of democracy even if they did have selfish goals.

Q

What were the similarities and differences between Isagoras and Cleithenes?

A

They both came from aristocratic families and had connections.

But Isagoras had stronger connections (ex: king of Sparta), benefitted from the Comradeship, wanted to establish an aristocracy and exiled a bunch of people he deemed cursed.

Cleithenes suffered during the comradeship, wants to establish a democracy by actually gaining the trust of his people and getting them involved in government and politics.
