Histo/Path of Cartilage Flashcards
3 types of cartilage
Hyaline
Elastic
Fibrocartilage
Perichondrium
Outer fibrous CT sheath
Contains vascular supply for avascular cartialge
Inner chondrogenic layer is essential for growth and maintenance
Absent on articular cartilage and fibrocartilage
What type of collagen is in
- Hyaline
- Fibrocartilage
- Type 2
2. Type 1
Arthropathy
General term for any disease of joint
Ex: arthritis, trauma, etc
OA definition
Chronic progressive disease of joints characterized by degeneration of articular cartilage resulting in structural and functional changes
Few inflammatory cells identified
Inflammatory mediators are involved
Early changes of OA
Chondrocytes proliferate, release inflammatory mediators
Remodelling of cartilage matrix
Secondary changes in synovium and subchondral bone (fissuring and clefting)
Late changes of OA
Loss of chondrocytes Loss of cartilage Subchondral changes (eburnation) Sclerosis of underlying cancellous bone Subchondral bone cysts Osteophytes
Clinical features of OA
Stiff, tender, and painful joints
Typically increases with use
Usually oligoarticular
No extra articular features
3 types of symptomatic relief
Pain relief (NSAIDs, injections)
Modify activities
Arthroplasty
