Histo Cementum Flashcards
What is the function of cementum?
It seals root dentin, attaches periodontal fibers, and helps repair root resorption.
Where is cementum located?
It covers the root of the tooth, between the dentin and periodontal ligament.
What are the types of cementum?
- Acellular Cementum – No cells, found in the upper root, mainly for attachment.
- Cellular Cementum – Contains cementocytes, found in lower root, helps with repair.
- Intermediate Cementum – Thin layer between dentin and cementum.
How does cementum help with root resorption?
It can repair and rebuild damaged areas of the root by depositing new cementum.
What are the two main types of cementum?
- Intermediate Cementum
- Cellular-Acellular Cementum
What are the characteristics of Intermediate Cementum?
• Homogeneous (uniform in structure).
• Formed by epithelial root sheath cells.
What are the characteristics of Cellular-Acellular Cementum?
• Thicker than intermediate cementum.
• Has a bone-like structure.
• Formed by cementoblasts, which originate from fibroblasts.
