- Indian immigrant
- Enlisted in WWI
- Argued for citizenship under the 1906 naturalization act by claiming himself as a caucasian man – no category for Asians
- Taken to supreme court, told that although he was legally considered white, he wasn’t white in the ‘common eye’
- Caused other Indian immigrants to lose their citizenship, led to loss of land ownership and some suicides
- Shaped immigration policy until the 1946 Luce-Celler act which introduced quotas per Asian country

Patsy Mink
- Japanese woman born in 1927 in Hawaii, which at the time was still only a territory of the US
- Went to law school in Chicago, became the first woman to practice law in Hawaii
- Engaged in politics in Hawaii in the 50s, helped to found the Hawaiian Democratic Party during the transition to statehood
- Lost once in house to Inoyue eventually became the first Asian American woman in congress in 1964 as she earned a seat in the House of Representatives
- Created bills like Title IX which combats sexism in education

Chinoiserie
- Genre of art popular in 17th and 18th century
- Consisted of pottery, furniture, and wallpapers with designs depicting what Europeans thought life in Asia looked like
- Deemed exotic and foreign because it was so different that European traditional art
- During the 1800s, European opinion on Asians were neutral because of this
- When immigration to the US began though, Europeans began losing respect for the culture because for the first time they intereact with the people

Ethnic Nationalism
- Concept of nationalism - people identifying with each other based on the nation they come from - based on ethnicity; people from similar geography stick together
- Several organizations stemmed from this during the Civil Rights Movement
- I Wor Keun and the KDP were notable Asian American groups, actually transnational
- I Wor Kuen advocated for education, end of American military, liberation of all ‘third world peoples’, socialist society… spelt Amerika with a K in reference to KKK
- Took some inspiration from socialist/communist notions (Mao and Ho Chi Minh) and saw these as ways to solve the problems they face
- Feeling that the American Dream was unreachable

Larry Itliong
- Led the Delano (Cali) grape strike of 1965
- Main force behind the rallying of Filipino workers against their working conditions
- Fought for fair wages and better living conditions
- Contributions were overshadowed by Ceasar Chavez after uniting the Filipino workers with the Mexican workers - Solidarity
- In the end, the Filipino workers still had it worse than the Mexican workers
- Did found the United Farm Workers (UFW) union though

- Basically, people would create fake families, and claim people were related to them when they were not simply to get them into the US - allowed because family was already in the US
- Chinese Americans lied by saying they still had kids in China and just wanted to bring them over
- During the period of Chinese Exclusion in 1882 where Chinese people were banned from entering the US
- Peaked in 1906 after the earthquake where records of people were destroyed
- Many Chinese Americans today cannot trace their lineage because they come from paper sons and daughter’s whose real ancestry is lost

- Intro: explain manifest destiny; relationship still exists; impact on cultural landscape and relationship with America
- Impact: suppresion of culture; economic tade; nationalist sentiment
- Short Term: first country annexed by US; suppresion of culture; periods of protest
- Long Term: Balikbayan boxes - high demand for American products; military bases; political turmoil cause they were never able to rule themselves
- Conclusion: America sucks for manifest destiny and has affected the developmment of the Philippines as its own nation and culture

What was Executive Order 9066 and its origins? Why was it controversial? From family dynamics to matters of civil liberties (and everything in between), how did E.O. 9066 specifically impact Japanese Americans? Discuss.
Intro, Thesis, Bodies, Conclusion
- Intro: after pearl harbor; signed by FDR Feb 19th 1942; authorized incarceration 2/3 were American born; extremely negative impact due to forced relocation, loss of livelihood, loyalty in question
- Controversial: messed up family dynamics, kids didn’t listen to parents + no privacy etc; racist against Asians; Buddy Uno; biggest civil rights violation in American history
- Impact: forced relocation, cramped; loss of culture, kids didn’t learn Japanese; trauma in parents and difference in kids; loyalty questionaires that drafted them or denounced ‘allegience to the emperor’ though 2/3 were American born
- Conclusion: horrible time for everyone, racism was used as an excuse to treat all Japanese people like prisoners
