HIROSHI Flashcards
‘In a fit of rage
‘In a fit of rage Hiroshi went flying at Sochan’ (p.100)
When Hiroshi hears gossip about his brother Shinji, and Hatsue, through the use of the noun ‘rage’ it shows Hiroshi’s disapproval of gossiping and the danger of it. Gossiping could lead to conflict. He is like his mother, who also dislikes gossip.
folded in these familiar arms,
folded in these familiar arms, Hirsohi slept soundly’ (p.97)
Through the use of the adverb ‘soundly’, it is shown how Hiroshi feels very comfortable and secure being back on the island. Mishima also uses the visual imagery from a close point to a far point, it is to create a mental picture through the description of the visual sensations. It shows the calmness Hiroshi is in for being back on the island.
‘Those gleaming streetcars and automobiles that had come upon him so suddenly, flashed by, and disappeared, those towering buildings and neon lights that had so amazed him - where were they now?’ (p.96)
The adjective ‘gleaming’ and the verb ‘flashed’ are symbolic of the allure of the city with its bright lights and sensations. However, it’s obvious from the rest of the novel that these attractions are just superficial. The city cannot provide the sense of community and connection available at Uta-Jima, even though Uta-Jima may not contain the same kind of thrill and excitement.
