Hippocrates 1 Flashcards
What did Hippocrates begin to question about the old superstitious ways of health and medicine?
He queried the belief that health was controlled by Gods and spirits.
Hippocrates felt that Doctors should:-
Ask about symptoms, examine the patient, ignore nothing, make complete notes. Just as Doctors do today).
Hippocrates encouraged Doctors to :-
Look for natural treatments instead of turning to the Gods for help.
He contradicted the view that epilepsy was due to a god or evil spirits. He said :-
Epilepsy is not, in my view any more sacred or divine than any other disease.
The Hippocratic Collection is
a collection of detailed books that detailed how different illnesses develop for centuries following.
Hippocrates founded a medical school on the Greek Island of Cos.
His students helped to spread his ideas.
Before practising each newly trained Doctor swore an oath-the Hippocratic Oath.
The oath bound him to do his medical work to do his medical work to he best of his ability.
Hippocrates advised that operations……
should only be carried out if the patient had a good chance of survival.
