What is HIPAA?
Federal law to protect Americans from losing health insurance; designed to streamline the health care system by creating standards for uniform transmission of electronic health care claims; requires standards for storage of patient information and protecting privacy rights
Principle A: Beneficence And Nonmaleficence
psychologists should strive to benefit others and minimize harm; includes the welfare of patients, students, animals, and human subjects
Principle B: Fidelity And Responsibility
psychologists should clarify roles and manage conflicts; consultation and cooperation
with other professionals is encouraged; concern for the ethical compliance of others (gatekeeping)
Principle C: Integrity
psychologists should promote accuracy,
honesty, and truthfulness; uphold commitments; use deception with care
Principle D: Justice
all persons should benefit from psychology,
and should be treated equally; psychologists are cautioned to ensure their limitations don’t result in injustice
Principle E: Respect For People’s Rights And Dignity
includes respect for the rights of privacy, confidentiality, self-determination, and autonomy; mandates sensitivity to cultural diversity
