- Inability to move after a fall
- Severe hip/groin pain
- Stiffness
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Shorter leg
- Outward turning leg

- Older age (decreased bone density and mass)
- Female (70% hip fractures - menopause, oestrogen and bone density)
- Chronic medical conditions (endocrine, intestinal)
- Certain medications
- Nutritional problems
- Physical inactivity
- Tobacco and alcohol

- Reduced future independence
- Can shorten life
- Immobilisation = clots, bedsores, UTI, pneumonia, decreased muscle mass
