  • Female (70% hip fractures - menopause, oestrogen and bone density)
  • Chronic medical conditions (endocrine, intestinal)
  • Certain medications
  • Nutritional problems

  • Tobacco and alcohol

  • Reduced future independence
  • Can shorten life
  • Immobilisation = clots, bedsores, UTI, pneumonia, decreased muscle mass
