Hip Dysplasia Surgical Option 1. Juvenile Public Symphsiodesis (JPS) Flashcards

1
Q

What is JPS surgery?

A

JPS surgery uses an electrocautery unit to cause thermal destruction of the growth plate of the floor of the pelvis. As the rest of the pelvis grows this leads to a change in the angle of orientation of the acetabulum’s (sockets) giving better stability in the hips

Q

Surgical Procedure

A
  1. One third to half to the cranial growth plate is cauterised every 2-3mm along the symphysis using a spatula end electrocautery unit.
  2. This causes thermal destruction of the growth plate, prematurely closing the cranial pubic symphysis.
  3. The premature closure causes ventroversion of the acetabulum allowing the head of the femur to sit more comfortably in the socket.
  4. This procedure should only be performed during 16-20 weeks while the growth plate is still open allowing for a better degree of ventroversion.
