Hip and Thigh: Bones and Muscles Flashcards
What is the anatomical definition of the leg?
Leg: between knee and ankle. Whole thing: lower limb.
Name the 3 components of the hip bone

Function of muscles of gluteal region:
Extend, rotate, abduct thigh at hip joint. While walking, they are responsible for holding pelvis level and minimising tilt.
Function of the iliopsoas
Major flexors of the thigh at hip joint. Arises from posterior abdo wall
Functions of the muscles of the ant/med/post compartments
Ant;: Extension of knee (e.g. iliopsoas/hip flexor). Med: adduction. Post: flexion of knee (and hip).
Fascia Lata

Iliotibial tract
Lateral part of the fascia lata.
Tensor fascia lata

Function of glut max
Extends at hip joint and laterally rotates. Doesn’t come around far enough to abduct. Involved in flexion/extension of thigh
Piriformis

Name the reinforcers of the hip joint
Piriformis, obt int, quad fem
Function of Glut med + Glut min
Maintains a horizontal/stable pelvis and prevent tilt during swing phase of walking
Function of iliopsoas
Flexes trunk on the fixed thigh (initial phase of walking). Also important postural muslce during standing (maintains normal lumbar lordosis in standing position).
Pectineus function
Dual action -> Dual nerve supply.
