where is the stationary arm for hip extension ROM
midline of the torso
where is the moving arm for hip extension ROM
greater trochanter to lateral femoral condyle
Normal hip abduction ROM
40-55
testing position for hip abduction ROM
supine, neutral pelvis, LEs extended
where is the stationary arm located in hip abduction ROM
parallel to line between ASIS
where is the moving arm located in hip abduction ROM
ASIS of leg being tested to midline of the patella
Normal Hip Adduction ROM
20-25
Testing position of hip adduction ROM
supine, neutral pelvis, LE extended
where is the stationary arm in hip adduction ROM
parallel to the line of ASIS
where is the moving arm in hip adduction ROM
ASIS to midline of patella
normal hip internal rotation ROM
30-45
testing position of hip Internal rotation ROM
seated with legs hanging off the table
where is the stationary arm in hip internal rotation ROM?
perpendicular to the floor
where is the active arm in hip internal rotation ROM
midline of the patella between malleoli
Normal hip external rotation ROM
30-55
testing position of hip external rotation ROM
seated with legs hanging off the table
where is the stationary arm in Hip external rotation ROM
perpendicular to the floor
where is the moving arm in Hip external rotation
midline of the patella between the malleoli
main muscles in hip flexion
iliacus and psoas major
minor muscles in hip flexion
rectus femoris, sartorius, TFL, Pectineus, and gluteus medius
Hip Flexion MMT Grade 0/1 position
supine; palpating the lessor trochanter for trace
Hip Flexion MMT grade 2 postion
sideline
Hip Flexion MMT grade 3/4/5 postion
seated position
main muscles of hip extension
glute max, semitendinosus, semimebranosus, biceps femoris long head
minor muscles in hip extention
adductor magnus, gluteus medius
hip extension MMT grade 0/1 position
prone; palpate hamstrings at ischial tuberosity
hip extension MMT grade 2 position
sideline; PT should have hand supporting knee and the other on ASIS to limit pelvic tilt
hip extension MMT grade 3/4/5 position
prone: in resistance one hand should be on pelvis the other hand should be pressing down above the ankle
Hip Abduction Main Muscles
gluteus medius, gluteus minimus
Hip abduction minor muscles
glute max (upper fibers), TFL, Obturator internus, superior and inferior gemellus, sartorius
hip abduction grade 0 and 1 position
supine; PT should have one hand on the ankle and another palpating the gluteus medius on the greater trochanter
hip abduction grade 2 position MMT
supine; make sure knee is being pointed to the sky during movement to prevent hip rotation
hip abduction grade 3/4/5 position MMT
slideline testing the upper limb, lower leg can be bent for stability; start my pressing above the ankle for a longer lever arm
main muscles of hip adduction
adductor magnus, adductor longus, adductor bravis, pecctineus, gracilis
minor muscles in hip adduction
obturator externus, glute max
hip adduction grade 0/1 positon MMT
supine; palpating the adductor magnus for a trace
hip adduction grade 2 MMT
supine; opposite leg abducted to prevent interfering
hip adduction grade 3/4/5 MMT
sideline with upper limb being held in an abducted position
hip external rotation main muscles
obturator internus, obturator externus, piriformis, superior gemellus, inferior gemellus, quad femoris, glute max posterior fibers
hip external rotation minor muscles
sartorius, beceps femoris long head, gluteus medius, psoas major, adductor magnus, adductor longus, popliteus
grade 0 and 1 hip external rotation MMT
supine with testing limb in internal rotation. Unable to palpate (give one if there is discernible movement)
grade 2 hip external rotation MMT
seated or supine line in grade 0/1 test (do supine if patient is unable to sit)
grade 3/4/5 hip external rotation MMT
seated
hip internal rotation main muscles
gluteus minimus anterior fibers, TFL, Gluteus medius
hip internal rotation minor muscles
glute max, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, adductor magnus, adductor longus
hip internal rotation grade 0/1 postion MMT
supine with test limb externally rotated (palpate gluteus medius and TFL)
hip internal rotation grade 2 postion MMT
seated or in supine if unable to sit
hip internal rotation 3/4/5 postion MMT
seated
FABERS test
Flexion, abduction, and external rotation of hip (figure 4); can quantify by measuring the distance from the knee to the table. Positive test if there is pain or restriction
FADIRS test
Flexion, adduction, internal rotation of hip. Pain for limitation indicates femoral acetabular impingement. Positive test if there is pain or restriction
