Both works use a pivotal and intense experience as a catalyst for the transition from innocence to experience; one that forces knowledge on the narrators and transforms their understanding of the world around them. For Szymborska’s narrator, it is surviving displacement in a war, while for Dillard’s narrator it is bearing witness to a total eclipse of the sun.
