Hillslopes Flashcards
Factor of safety
(also called safety factor) For slope stability defined as the ratio of resisting to driving forces.
Landslide
Specifically, rapid downslope movement of rock and/or soil; also a general term for all types of downslope movement.
Mass Wasting
A comprehensive term for any type of downslope movement of earth materials.
Rotational landslide
Type of landslide that develops in homogeneous material; movement is likely to be rotational along a potential slide plane
Sinkhole
Surface depression formed by solution of limestone or collapse over a subterranean void such as a cave.
Snow avalanche
Rapid downslope movement of snow, ice, and rock.
Subsidence
Sinking, settling, or other lowering of parts of the crust of Earth.
Translational Landslide
Type of landslide in which movement takes place along a definite fracture plane, such as a weak clay layer or bedding plane.
