High pressure salt water system Flashcards
What pressure does the HPSWM run at?
7 bar
What decks will the HPSWM run on?
Usually 2 deck but sometimes 5 deck on larger ships.
How is the HPSWM powered?
It is supplied by electrically driven pumps.
Describe the function of the 10% leak off valve.
The 10% leak off valve maintains ring main pressure at 7 bar by discarding water if pressure exceeds 7.7 bar.
What are the uses of the HPSW system?
- Firefighting - hydrants, sprays, centre feed hose reels.
- Pre - wet
- Fitted bilge and sullage eductors
- Emergency cooling to prime movers.
- Auxiliary machinery cooling water system
- Making of fresh water
- Flushing heads (on certain ships)
Can salt water pumps be started locally and remotely?
Yes
What are the areas that a fixed fire fighting system would be located in?
- Magazines
- Paint lockers
- inflam store
- funnels
- Galley
What kind of environment would pre-wet be used in?
In an NBC environment (Nuclear, biological, chemical)
What is the purpose of pre-wet?
To reduce contamination of the upper decks in an NBC environment.
State DC (damage control state) 1
All Salt water pumps are turned on. Ring main is isolated by shutting the state valves to minimise effects from damage.
State DC (damage control state) 3
All isolating/state valves are open, one pump is supplying the whole system. Suction is taken from the sea through a strainer.
