Q

Effects of high pressure systems

A
  • The extreme heat caused suffering and discomfort for millions of people across Europe.
  • It caused heatstroke and dehydration, especially among elderly people
  • It is estimated that 30,000 people died
  • France was worse hit with 14,000 deaths. On a normal August day in France 50 people are admitted to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion but in 2003 this rose to 500.
  • It caused several forest fires in southern Europe
  • It is estimated to have cost 1 billion Euros of damage.
