High pressure and low pressure systems Flashcards
1
Q
What does the temperature does the sea need to be above for a hurricane to form?
A
27 degrees celcius
2
Q
Hurricanes can be described as
A
a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain
3
Q
Hurricanes strengthen when
A
water evaporated from the ocean is released as the saturated air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air
4
Q
Hurricanes are
A
areas of high temeperature low pressure which form over large stretches of water in the Tropics
5
Q
High pressure systems are also called
A
Anticyclones
6
Q
Effects of high pressure systems
A
- The extreme heat caused suffering and discomfort for millions of people across Europe.
- It caused heatstroke and dehydration, especially among elderly people
- It is estimated that 30,000 people died
- France was worse hit with 14,000 deaths. On a normal August day in France 50 people are admitted to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion but in 2003 this rose to 500.
- It caused several forest fires in southern Europe
- It is estimated to have cost 1 billion Euros of damage.
