High-performance Network Solutions Flashcards
What does VMQ/VMMQ stand for?
Virtual Machine Queue/Virtual Machine Multi-Queue
What does VMQ do?
Limits the amount of involvement a host server has when dealing with packets meant for the residing VMs by providing a more direct path straight to the VM.
Where can you go to configure VMQ for a virtual machine?
Within Hyper-V Manager > Virtual Machine’s Settings > Hardware > Network Adapter > Hardware Acceleration
Check the box that says “Enable virtual machine queue”
What does SR-IOV stand for?
Single Root I/O Virtualization
What does SR-IOV do?
Enables multiple VMs to share the same PCI Express physical hardware devices.
Where can you go to configure SR-IOV for a virtual machine?
Within Hyper-V Manager > Virtual Machine’s Settings > Hardware > Network Adapter > Hardware Acceleration
Check the box that says “Enable SR-IOV”
What does RSS stand for?
Received Side Scaling
What does RSS do?
Improves throughput or network traffic by distributing the load of the network I/O across multiple CPUs.
Where can you go to configure RSS?
Device Manager > Network Adapters > Network Adapter properties
What does RDMA stand for?
Remote Direct Memory Access
What does RDMA do?
On an RDMA-supported NIC, the NIC can run at full speed with very low latency, utilizing minimal host CPU resources with increased throughput.
Where would you go to configure RDMA in the GUI?
Device Manager > Network Adapters > Network Adapter properties
What PowerShell command is used to view RDMA-supported NICs?
Get-NetAdapterRdma
What PowerShell command is used to enable RDMA on a network adapter?
Enable-NetAdapterRdma “Ethernet 0”
What network performance features are enabled by default on Server 2016?
SMB Direct and SMB Mutlichannel
