General Recommendations for religious art (Council of Trent):

A
  • Religious art is an important instrument in the fight against Protestantism and can be used in a non-idolatrous way

Religious art is to:

  • re-assert the authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church
  • Stress the importance of Church rituals
  • include an accurate retelling of religious narratives with no artificial embellishment
  • include only tasteful representations, no gratuitous nudity etc
  • appeal to the emotions of the viewer in an effort to incite piety
