General Recommendations for religious art (Council of Trent):
A
- Religious art is an important instrument in the fight against Protestantism and can be used in a non-idolatrous way
Religious art is to:
- re-assert the authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church
- Stress the importance of Church rituals
- include an accurate retelling of religious narratives with no artificial embellishment
- include only tasteful representations, no gratuitous nudity etc
- appeal to the emotions of the viewer in an effort to incite piety
