Hierarchy: Design Principles Flashcards
Hierarchy
In graphic design utilizes several key principles, including size, colour, contrast, alignment, repetition, and brightness, to emphasize certain characteristics of the design.
Size
highlighting specific parts of your design by making them larger or smaller than the others.
Scale
refers to the relative size of a design element in comparison to another element.
Colour
By emphasizing the colour of specific objects, you show that you want the viewer to take note of those items.
Proximity
Keeping items close to one another in your design may show that they’re related.
Negative Space
Using white space, or blank space, around a particular part of a design element often draws more attention to it.
Repetition
Using a similar pattern or object over and over, you increase its importance and draw more attention to it - emphasizing certain design elements.
Alignment
The position of an item in your design can help draw attention to it.
Rule of Thirds
A composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two-thirds more open.
