Hicks universalism + ELECTION Flashcards
What is hicks universalism
the belief that an omnibelevolent God wouldnt send people to heaven but others to hell
what is limited election
the view that only certain people will be saved
what does augustine say about limited election
because of original sin, no one is guaranteed salvation- it is given to us by Gods grace, God chooses who will recieve heaven
what is single predestination
God chooses who goes to heaven- God has chosen who goes to heaven but those who go to hell make that decision by their own will
what does calvinism state
God has predestined some for heaven and hell, its wrong to suggest God isnt in control of the universe and so the decisions people make to believe in christ or not cant be seperated from Gods control
what is double predestination
God chooses who goes to heaven or hell, God wants everyone to go to heaven, but some simply cant accept and recieve his grace. humans cant know everything God has decided which is why we dont know who has been saved
how is double different to single
Single leads God to elect people based on the good they will do in life, his foreknowledge allows him to accept some but not all
what is unlimited election
the idea that all people are entitled to go to heaven but its possible some may not be saved.
who proposes this idea
karl barth
what does barths theology revolve around
Jesus christ, Jesus was god made and therefore he is the one who was elected and who elects, as Jesus took on human flesh, all humans have the potential to be saved
what do humans have to do to be elected
in order to be elected, they have to acknowledge christ as their lord and saviour, acknowledge he died on the cross for our sins
