Part D: Comprehension Questions: Please be familiar with the following discussion questions, plus any additional questions that were covered in ch. 1-5. (Refer to the worksheet questions we discussed in class.) TE, page number, & sentence starters will be necessary for most; 2-3 sentences minimum for each.

  1. How does Byron earn the nickname, “The Lipless Wonder?” Use text evidence, page number, sentence starter to support your answer. Also include WHO gave Byron the nickname.
On page 18-19 the text states that Byron earns his nickname “lipless wonder” when he kisses his reflection on the door mirror. His lips get stuck to the mirror since it’s so cold outside and when Momma jerks his head off the mirror, some of Byron’s lips (skin) remained on the mirror, thus leading to the nickname “lipless.” Kenny gave Byron this nickname and said he was going to create a comic book character called “the lipless wonder.”
  2. Part A. What causes teachers to treat Kenny differently than the other kids at school?
Part B. What effect does this special treatment have on Kenny?

Part A:On page 22, the author explains that Kenny is an excellent reader and teachers think he’s very smart. Because of this, teachers treat him differently than other students and praise him a lot.

Part B: The text says on page 22, this special treatment by teachers makes other students not like him as much. It also leads to negative attention from other students.

  1. Why does Rufus save half of the sandwich Kenny gives him at lunch for later? Explain why Rufus needs to save half of his sandwich.

I think Rufus saves half of his sandwich from Kenny to share with his younger brother, Cody. On page 34 the text states, “He really was a strange kid; he only ate half the sandwich and folded the rest up in the waxed paper…” Also, on page 36 it says, “I know he didn’t think I noticed, but the big kid have his little brother the other half of my sandwich.” I can infer the family does not have enough money to provide a lunch for the two boys, and that is why they don’t bring a lunch to school.

  1. Why is Kenny reluctant to spend time with Rufus?

Kenny thought that spending time with Rufus would make kids tease both of them twice as much, (as he stated in chapter 2). But Kenny realizes he was wrong because on page 42 he said, “I was wrong when I said that me and Rufus being near each other would make people tease both of us twice as much.” Students focus on teasing Rufus and Cody because Rufus talked real Southern and he also had very few clothes that he and his brother switched off wearing.

  1. In chapter 4 we learn that Larry Dunn is probably poor. What evidence (3 pieces of evidence) supports this inference?

Larry Dunn stole Byron’s gloves because he didn’t have any of his own and had been wearing socks on his hands for gloves. On page 58, Kenny says, “Larry Dunn had stolen my gloves, then painted them black with shoe polish.” Kenny knows this because the inside of the gloves were brown (the black paint had worn off) and Kenny’s gloves had been brown. Plus we know Larry Dunn is poor, because his windbreaker was ripped under both arms, and he had only a t-shirt on underneath, his shoes had holes in the bottom. The narrator says on page 61 that after By lifted Larry up and threw him, he landed on his butt. Then the crowd noticed that Larry Dunn’s shoes had holes in the bottom of them and he had pieces of cardboard box in them to cover the holes.

  1. Momma knows how dangerous fire can be. Explain what happened when she was a little girl. (Chapter 5) Use TE, page number & sentence starter in your answer.

On page 64 the text states, “Momma told that same sad old story about how when she was a little girl her house caught on fire and for two years after that she and her brothers had to wear clothes that smelled like smoke.” The story always made Momma and Joey get sad and weepy, but it was funny to By and Kenny.

  1. What evidence from the book proves that Byron doesn’t take Momma’s fire warnings seriously? TE, page number, and sentence started needed to support your answer.

Byron didn’t take Momma’s fire warnings seriously at all. On page 65 the text states, “By got put on punishment for a month, but even before a week was gone, he started up again.” This means he was grounded for a month, but not even a week later, he was back at playing with fire again. By was pretending he was making a movie about Nazi parachutes that got shot down over the Flint River, and lighting the toilet paper parachutes on fire and then dropping them in the toilet.
