What is Medicare?
Australia’s universal health insurance scheme:
- Provides permanent residents, Australians, people with reciprocal agreement access to affordable basic healthcare with no discrimination.
IT IS NOT FREE - subsidised by the federal government

Components of the private Australian Healthcare system
- Private health insurance
- Private hospital
- medical practitioners in private practice
What is a schedule fee?
An amount set by the federal government for each medical service
National disability insurance scheme (NDIS)
Provides service and support for people with permanent, significant disabilities and their families and carers.
Funded by the federal and state/territory governments, the NDIS works to assist individuals with disabilities to live an ordinary life
Permanent disability
disability that is most likely lifelong
Significant disability
Disability that causes a large impact
People eligible for the NDIS
Citizenship criteria:
- Aged under 65
- Australian citizen or permanent resident/protected special category visa
- Live in Australia where the NDIS is available
Disability criteria
- Permanent impairment or condition
- Substantially reduced ability to participate effectively in activities or perform tasks
- impairments affects the capacity for social and economic participation
- Likely to require life long support
NDIS plan
Individuals make themselves a plan for what they need for daily lives and how the individual wants to manage their plan overtime.
It is extremely expensive due to them providing full subsidies. (e.g installing railing and ramps)
