Heuristics Flashcards
1
Q
Three main heuristics
A
- Availability
- Representative
- Anchoring and adjustment
2
Q
Availability Heuristic
A
The probability of events occurring is judged by how easily these events are brought to mind.
3
Q
Biases associated with the Availability Heuristic
A
- When ease of recall is not associated with probability
- Ease of imaginations is not related to probability
- Illusory correlation - an overestimation of the frequency with which two events occur together.
4
Q
Representative Heuristic
A
Judging how representative an object, person or event is of a certain category or process
5
Q
Biases associated with Representative Heuristic
A
- Ignoring base rate frequencies
(Find that 10% of delegates in a convention are salesmen but don’t consider this when judging how ‘typical’ Peter is of a salesman) - Expecting sequences of events to appear random
- Expecting chance to be self-correcting
- Ignoring regression to the mean
- The conjunction fallacy
6
Q
Anchoring and Adjustment Heuristic
A
Where judgements and estimates are made from initial values that would need to be adjusted to obtain a final estimate.
7
Q
Biases associated with the anchoring and adjustment heuristic
A
- Insufficient adjustment
- Overestimating the probability of conjunctive events
- Underestimating the probability of disjunctive events
