heston Flashcards
what was the sample of group 1
50 adoptees who’s mothers were believed to be mentally healthy
what was the sample of group 2
50 adoptees who’s mothers had schizophrenia and were confined to an Oregon state psychiatric hospital
what years were the participants born in
1915-1945
what was the aim
to see how many adopted children of biological mothers with schizophrenia would go on to develop it themselves
what criteria did the mothers have to meet
a diagnosis of schizophrenia
no diseases
put their child up for adoption
mother and child were separated
had evidence of consistent behaviours of schizophrenia
where were the interviews conducted
at the participants house
what format were the interviews
standardised
how were participants asked to participate
a letter was sent to them
what inventory was administrated after the interview
MMPI
what questionnaire was used to explore what dimensions of the participant
general medical and environmental questionnaire explored the psychological dimensions of the participants
describe the procedure
2 psychiatrists independently reviewed information on each participant and a third researched made the final evaluation
every participant received a score between 0-100 that ranked the psycho-social disability(based on the MHSRS)
what was the risk percentage of developing schizophrenia if one parent had it
10%
what were the results
5 schizophrenic mothers had been hospitalised, 3 were chronically ill
10% of the adopted children of schizophrenic mothers developed it
none of the control group developed it, so the experience of adoption didn’t affect the likelihood of getting schizophrenia
3 participants were chronic deteriorated patients who had been hospitalised for multiple years and 2 had been hospitalised and taken antipsychotic drugs
roughly 1/2 of the participants born to schizophrenic patients demonstrated a significant excess of psycho-social disability
evaluate the generalisability
all born in Oregon so not good generalisability
used children born to schizophrenic and non schizophrenic so good generalisability
evaluate the reliability
used MMPI and MHSRS which are both standardised tests to good reliability
