–Volume of IV fluid required often depends on the amount of gastric or intestinal tube drainage (replacement fluids often prescribed mL for mL).
–K+ is added to IV fluids to correct or prevent hypokalemia.
–Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) may be indicated to meet nutritional needs if obstruction or recovery is prolonged.
Nutritional Support:
IV fluid and electrolyte support
Isotonic solution is 0.9% sodium.
TX: to supply balanced amounts of water and sodium chloride.
Hypotonic solution of 0.45% sodium chloride
TX: may be ordered if the patient’s body fluids are concentrated owing to excessive water loss.
Hypertonic solutions
TX: when pt. has had excessive losses of both sodium and chloride.
