Herzberg's Two-Factor Model of Motivation Flashcards
General Background of Two-Factor Theory
Herzberg set out to determine the effect of attitude on motivation, by asking people to describe the times when they felt really good, and really bad, about their jobs. What he found was that people who felt good about their jobs gave very different responses from the people who felt bad.
Two different factors
Hygiene factors and Motivation factors
Which factors are extrinsic or intrinsic?
Hygiene factors are extrinsic and satisfy the lower levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of need. Motivation factors are intrinsic and satisfy the upper levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
What do hygiene factors cause?
Absence of hygiene factors cause job dissatisfaction and cause employees to work less hard.
What do motivation factors cause?
Presence of motivation factors cause employees to have increased job satisfaction.
What are examples of hygiene factors?
Working conditions, coworker relations, policies and rules, supervisor quality, salary/benefits, job security
What are examples of motivation factors?
Achievement, recognition, responsibility, the work itself, advancement, personal growth
What is the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators?
Intrinsic and extrinsic motivators have an inverse relationship. Intrinsic motivators increase motivation when they are present while extrinsic motivators reduce motivation when they are absent.
