Hernias Flashcards
Where is a femoral hernia commonly found?
-Bowel herniates through femoral canal
-Inferior + Lateral to pubic tubercle
How are direct and indirect inguinal hernias differentiated?
-Indirect = bowel herniates through inguinal canal
-Direct = bowel herniates through Hesselbach’s triangle in abdominal wall
INDIRECT will remain reduced if pressure is applied to deep inguinal ring (midway point between ASIS + pubic tubercle)
What risks are associated with hernias?
-Incarceration (cannot be reduced)
-Strangulation (compromising of blood supply leading to necrosis)
-Obstruction (obstruction of flow of abdominal contents)
NB FEMORAL hernias most at risk of these complications due to femoral ring being narrow
